Microsoft's "AI-driven job cuts": How disinformation is being used to exploit narratives

Between May 1 and August 6, 2025, Microsoft carried out several rounds of layoffs in the context of its AI strategy—a total of over 15,000 jobs. Such job cuts are not uncommon in the technology sector. However, in the social media reactions over the course of the news cycle, we found evidence of targeted disinformation campaigns.
An analysis of 2,681 profiles on X revealed that 29% of the accounts were fake – almost three times the usual rate. These inauthentic, non-real networks orchestrated narratives portraying Microsoft's AI initiatives as inhumane, profit-driven, and politically problematic. Their activities not only distorted public perception but also triggered actual boycott calls with reach in the millions.
This case once again impressively demonstrates that companies are vulnerable not only economically, but also in terms of communication.
